Geography at Portland Place School
Geography is about understanding human activity and its impact on the physical environment. The department is committed to fieldwork and teaching key skills such as map interpretation. Pupils are encouraged to adopt an enquiry-based approach and lessons are enriched by use of ICT.
All pupils take this subject at Key Stage 3 and many continue with GCSE level. A growing number of students take Geography at A Level.
Geography and history students are encouraged to explore subjects of particular interest to them. Please click on any of the links below to find out more.
Fieldwork Resources The geography department has recently acquired a large selection of fieldwork and class demonstration resources. Here two pupils are testing our water cycle simulator, which aims to teach about the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. [ Photograph ]
Global Catastrophes Last November, three Sixth Formers attended a lecture on Global Catastrophes (and how to survive them!) given by Professor Bill McGuire at the Natural History Museum. It was a thought-provoking insight into the wide range of natural hazards affecting our planet and man-made climate change.
World AIDS Day On 1st December 2005 the Geography Department ran a series of lessons across the lower school. The project began with an assembly calling for sympathy and understanding for the suffering millions. The Lower School responded by creating posters highlighting the main issues, and presentations highlighting the difference between the global distribution of the illness and available medicines.
